Year 2 – Food For Fitness
Year 2 learn together explore the common benefits of having a healthy diet, growing their own food and understanding how plants and crops grow and survive, looking at where and why they grow in these places. The Cool Kids Cook guides them on their way, teaching them how to cook and how to write their own instructions, giving them a chance to cook some of their own healthy choices. Through mono-printing they create their own images of the wonderful animals/fruit they discover and study Barbara Hepworth's beautiful natural sculptures. By learning the friendship song and the real opera 'The Magic Flute' in music they understand better how we care and respect one another. Finally, in computing they learn to programme the Micro-bits and communicate safely through the internet.

Homelearning
Homelearning
Your child will be getting spelling, maths and topic-based home learning tasks. These can be completed in their homelearning books or on Teams. They will be set on a Wednesday and expected to return their home learning book by Tuesday to get work for the following week.
This half term, we will be learning about the fossils. Please do see the new Knowledge Organiser for our new topic Finding out from Fossils. Please choose 1 activity per week to complete from the home learning menu. They do not have to be done in any particular order. Be as creative as you like with your learning. I look forward to seeing all the fantastic work the children produce.
P.E.
Our P.E. lessons will be every Monday and Tuesday.
Please ensure your child has the correct St. Luke's PE kit. We will still be doing outdoor PE when the weather turns cold, so navy joggers and sweatshirt will be required.
NO JEWELLERY is to be worn for any PE lessons; this includes earrings, bracelets, necklaces and watches.
Other Helpful Hints
Reading
The most important educational support you can provide is to read and enjoy books with your child. In the past we have sent home books for you to read with your child in three forms.
1. A book at your child’s level to read and decode using their phonic knowledge. Children use the skills they have learnt in school and apply them to the new book.
2. A library book- this can be any book of any level to enjoy at home together.
3. Phonic sounds and tricky words to practice at home. From September 2024, children at the earlier stages of reading (Year 1 and year 2), the above procedure will continue, however the phonic book they receive will have already been read and practiced in a small group in school with an adult.
This should therefore make it easier for them to repeat the task at home by reading aloud for you, as the children will have already been supported with overcoming difficulties.
Books will be sent home to you on a Wednesday and you will need to have returned them to school by the following Monday, so that we are able to change them.
It is essential that you spend fifteen minutes every week day doing one or two of the following to support your child as they learn to read.
Option One: Your children reads their school book aloud to you, to practice their skills.
Option Two: Your children reads the cumulative texts and practices the tricky words from their phonic lessons.
Option Three: You and your child share a book/magazine together and enjoy the experience.
Option Four: You as a parent read the library book or any home book to your child to enjoy.
Having reading experiences daily will build your child’s confidence and so improve their reading skills, and love of learning.
Water Bottles
Your child must bring in a water bottle each day. Our water fountains are currently switched off, so water bottles from home are essential. They will bring these home each day.
Birthdays
Please be reminded that children are not to bring in party bags or sweets. Instead, we ask that a book is donated to our school/class library.
